Life along the Rhine
The Rhine is the life-blood of Basel, and the riverside promenades are popular routes for family walks, jogging or romantic strolls. Take a seat in one of the many small cafés and watch the ships as they battle valiantly against the strong Rhine current. Anyone who would like to better understand the very special relationship that the residents of Basel have with ‘their’ Rhine, should visit one of the Art Nouveau bathing houses, don their swimwear, stroll upstream and then – as the Basel inhabitants have done for hundreds of years – float downstream as far as the sun terrace of the Buvette.
The Rhine flows right through the center of the Old Town, past the cathedral, and is an integral part of city life. Cross the ‘Middle Bridge’, the oldest Rhine crossing and a symbol of the city. At the center of the bridge is the ‘Käppelijoch’, the spot where in the Middle Ages, the death sentence was carried out. But should this be too eerie for you, then just ring the bell in the dock and call the ‘Fährimaa’ to carry you safely across on his ferry.
